In industrial food production, moving raw materials efficiently is half the battle. For a scaling specialty coffee roastery, pneumatic vacuum conveyance—using negative air pressure to transport green coffee through pipes—is the single most effective way to eliminate manual handling bottlenecks. It streamlines the workflow, dramatically improves floor ergonomics, and allows for clean, vertical integration.
However, many roasters approach pneumatic transport with a "plug-and-play" mindset, only to find that their new system is actively degrading their product. If you don't understand the fluid dynamics inside your conveyance lines, you will trade a manual labour bottleneck for a high-cost product quality defect.
The Physics of Material Velocity and Friction
Designing a vacuum conveyance loop requires a balance between air velocity and material mass. The objective is to keep the green coffee moving in a dense, steady stream rather than a chaotic, high-speed bombardment.

The Velocity Trap (Bean Fracture): Green coffee seeds are dense, brittle structures. If your vacuum pump pulls too hard or your pipe diameter is too narrow, the air velocity inside the line skyrockets. The beans enter a state of lean-phase transport, bouncing violently off the inner walls of the pipe. When they hit a rigid 90-degree turn, the impact energy shatters the bean cell structure, creating chips, cracks, and fragments.

The Roasting Defect: These fractured, broken pieces have a much lower mass than a whole green bean. If you spend top dollar sourcing flawless green coffee, only to crack it inside your own plumbing before it even reaches the roaster, your process is fundamentally broken.
A lean pneumatic system uses precision-engineered air-to-material ratios to achieve dense-phase or continuous medium-velocity flow. This moves the green coffee smoothly and gently, protecting the structural integrity of the seed while maintaining high-volume throughput.
The Master Technician’s Action Plan
To implement a gentle, high-performance vacuum conveyance loop, apply these three engineering principles:

Utilise Wide-Radius Sweeps: Never use standard, tight plumbing elbows in a vacuum line. All directional changes must utilise long, wide-radius bends (minimum 10x the pipe diameter) to allow the green coffee to glide smoothly around the corners rather than smashing directly into the metal walls.

Calibrate the Air-to-Material Ratio: Adjust your vacuum system's air intake to ensure the line is properly saturated with coffee. Loading the pipe correctly keeps the velocity low and stable, using a cushion of beans to protect individual seeds from impact.

Mandatory Grounding Straps: Ensure every single section of your conveyance piping—especially if utilising flexible anti-static polyurethane hosing—is physically bonded with copper grounding straps to a dedicated earth ground. This completely dissipates static build-up safely away from your electronic controls.
